Zhang Hui’s recurring motif of a gently rippling water surface focuses on the flowing rhythm between light and dark. It is a stylized Yin and Yang, carefully painted with a minimalist color scheme which harmoniously covers the entire canvas. The powerful dense cityscapes are a counterpoint to the water surfaces. Complex geometric structures rhytmically pulse on the apparently expanding painting surface. Open areas neighbour color densities of red or lead gray. These works create atmospheres in which the viewer can appreciate the sense of emptiness and weight. One must submit to the art, to sensually roam across the canvases, in order to perceive the fluid rhythm and the alternation of tension and relaxation, in order to sense the depth of Qi.
